Eat Lardy Cake in Huffkins Traditional Tea Rooms in Burford
Huffkins Burford
With a handful of locations across the Cotswolds including Burford, Huffkins Tea Rooms celebrates its long history by serving traditional English cakes and Afternoon Tea, all freshly baked in Huffkins own craft bakery.
Huffkins Burford
Huffkins is a good name to know when you’re visiting the Cotswolds.
One of the pleasures of sightseeing and shopping in this beautiful part of the country is stopping for frequent cups of tea and a slice of cake when you’re in need of a rest and refreshment.
Huffkins Tea Rooms are just the right place. You’ll find them conveniently located in some of the Cotswolds most picturesque towns – Burford, Stow On The Wold, Witney, Cheltenham and Stratford Upon Avon.
Frequented by locals and tourists alike, Huffkins has remained true to its origins and serves traditional English cakes.
More recently, the company has branched out and opened two Huffkins tearooms in John Lewis stores. Hungry shoppers in Cheltenham and Kingston Upon Thames are the first to benefit.

Back in 1890, a Mr Titicombe started baking in Burford where he delivered bread and cakes to the villagers with his donkey and cart. Nowadays, Huffkins is still an independent family business with a craft bakery that has won several Great Taste Awards for their range of cakes, biscuits and breads.
Eat Lardy Cake
Specialities include Lardy cake, a rich and very sweet spiced bread. Lardy cakes were eaten on special occasions such as holidays and harvest festivals and are made using freshly rendered lard, flour, sugar, spices, currants and raisins. Once it’s been baked, you turn the cake upside down so that the lard can soak through.
Huffkins make Lardy cake using their own family recipe and – wait for this – serve it gently warmed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and butterscotch sauce.
Other traditional British cakes on the menu include toasted butter teacakes, Chelsea buns, iced buns, cherry Bakewell tarts and shortbread. Huffkins luxurious fruitcake is so good, it’s sold in Fortnum & Mason and the Royal Historic Palaces.

Afternoon Tea at Huffkins
On the menu, you’ll find a mouthwatering array of different afternoon teas to choose from, including vegan options. Some are named after a local Cotswold town or a local National Trust property.
At the lighter end of the scale is the Cotswold afternoon tea, essentially a traditional cream tea with scones, preserves and clotted cream. Add a sandwich and it becomes the Burford afternoon tea, a great lunch option for £12.95. The Celebration afternoon tea has it all – finger sandwiches, scones and a quarter bottle of Prosecco or Sipsmith dry gin.
Taste Cotswold Specialities
Coffee is hand-roasted in the Cotswolds in a traditional wood fire using seasoned cherry wood from the nearby Blenheim Estate (visitors to Chartwell will know this was the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill).
Teas are blended with Cotswolds fruits and lavender from the Cotswold Lavender Farm at Snowshill. There’s Hooky Best Bitter from the brewery, Cotswold cider and the gin and lemon cheesecake is made using Cotswold gin. Go home with jars of preserves of Cotswold Honey from Cotswold Bees in Kingham.
- Huffkins is opening its own baking school and will be holding masterclasses in its tearooms
- A great time to visit the Cotswolds for a weekend break is in early June when the Burford festival takes place
- Prefer something savoury? Visit The Cotswold Cheese Company to taste their local artisan cheeses

Lardy cakes can be made by substituting lard for butter.
