Yeo Valley Organic Garden at Holt Farm in Somerset

For a scrumptious day out in Somerset, book in for lunch at the Yeo Valley Canteen and then drive the short distance to Holt Farm to visit their organic garden and tea rooms. Wander through each section of the garden and you’ll discover stunning sculptures (we love the ha-ha with its kite flying above Blagdon Lake), creative planting schemes and in true Yeo Valley style, quirky touches such as rabbit-shaped topiary and glitter balls. The Tea Room terrace overlooking the vegetable garden is the perfect spot for a slice of cake and a mug of tea.

Visit a Stunning Organic Garden

Drive down the lane to Holt Farm and you’ll see Freisian cows happily grazing in the fields or others being milked in the huge shed. It’s their milk that’s turned into the delicious Yeo Valley organic butter, yogurt, cream and ice cream making Yeo Valley the largest organic business in Britain. The farm is home to the Mead family who have been farming in the area since the 1960s. Over the last 20 years, the gardens have been a labour of love for Sarah Mead. Open during the summer months, you’ll find everything here is homemade, from the cakes and scones through to the nitrogen-rich compost made by creating a special comfrey ‘tea’.

Wander Around The Garden

Featured in the book ‘The Most Amazing Gardens to Visit in Britain,‘ the Yeo Valley Organic Garden comprises six and a half acres of contemporary planting. Wander through different sections and you’ll see over 24,000 spring bulbs, a beautiful gravel garden with its tapestry of colours, quirky metalwork sculptures, a mesmerising meadow with amazing views of Blagdon lake, a vegetable garden and even an old Mini planted with nasturtiums.

Take Tea on the Terrace

Sit down on the terrace for lunch or Afternoon Tea where you’ll find the menu is similar to the one at Yeo Valley Canteen. Veggies come directly from the vegetable garden that’s located on the site of an old tennis court. If it’s a chilly day, retreat inside and sit by the cosy woodburner. Try a slice of the raspberry, lemon & yogurt tea loaf or buy Sarah Mead’s book ‘The Great British Farmhouse Cookbook’ and bake your own.
