When I first moved to London, over twenty years ago, the only food you could buy from a van was ice cream, dodgy-looking burgers, hot dogs and kebabs. It was even a challenge to sit alfresco at a nice café table and drink a decent cup of coffee.
Nowadays, it seems unimaginable. The food scene in London couldn’t be more different. There are plentiful street food stalls offering dishes from all over the world and I love it.
To get a handle on how this all happened, one of the best places to start is with a food tour of London’s East End. It’s where many early migrants to the capital settled bringing with them the distinctive flavours and tastes of their national cuisine.
Taste British Gastronomic History on an East London Food Tour
A relaxing and fun way to while away a couple of hours on a Sunday is to take this walking food tour of London’s East End.
Among the immigrants who originally settled in this part of the city, were the Romans, Dutch, Portugese, Jews and Bangladeshis. Their communities flourished around areas such as Brick Lane, famous in London as one of the best places to go for a Ruby Murray (cockney-speak for a curry).
Spitalfields with its old merchants’ house and church was a thriving centre too. Now it’s kitted out with smart shops and restaurants that provide lunchtime sustenance for stressed city workers in London’s adjacent financial district.
