Discover the story of how wine was brought to the Nantlle Valley

Originally known for its production of slate rather than grapes, the Nantlle Valley is fast gaining a reputation for Welsh wine. It’s all down to the passion of one man and his wife.
Richard Huws, in his earlier life a BAFTA award-winning cameraman, had visited Pant Du Farm near Penygroes as a child. He had a long held dream of running his own vineyard.
Having travelled around Europe to learn about wine production, he turned his dream into a reality in 2003 by buying the farm, recognising the benefits of its rich soil and fine climate.

Tour the Vineyard and Taste Pant Du Wines

By 2007, the vineyard had been established and by 2010, their first bottle of Pant Du wine produced.

Tour the vineyard today and you’ll see eight varieties of grape growing including Bacchus, Sauvignon Blanc and Rondo. Grapes are harvested by hand and taken to a winery to be processed and bottled.

Sit in the vineyard sipping wine while taking in the spectacular view or visit on select dates for specialist wine tasting evenings and guided tours of the orchard and vineyard.

See The Famous Bardsey Apple in the Orchard

Pant Du orchard covers an area of 16 acres with no less than 2,900 apple trees.

Many of these are traditional cider apples but some are native Welsh apple varieties including the famous Bardsey apple from the windswept Bardsey Island off the Llyn Peninsula.

Brought to the island over 100 years ago by monks from Normandy, it was once thought to have been extinct. It was ‘discovered’ in 1998. With help from the Brogdale Trust, it was named a unique variety and cuttings were taken for propagation.

On a golden autumnal afternoon, stroll through the apple orchard before tasting Pant Du cider or their refreshing apple juice.
