The Judge’s Lodging, York

The Judge’s Lodging is a fine Grade I listed Georgian house, situated in the very heart of York. It’s also a stylish and welcoming inn with contemporary rooms, part of the Thwaites Inns of Character.

Location-wise, it doesn’t get much better than this in York.

Turn right out of the entrance and you’re a 2 minute walk from York Minster, turn left and you’re walking along York’s cobbled streets with its independent shops, tea rooms, restaurants and historic sites.

The Judge’s Lodging in York is the sort of place you’d wish you’d known about. It’s a particularly lovely place to stay in the summer months when you can dine outside or enjoy a G&T on the terrace (made with York gin, of course).

It makes an ideal base for exploring all of York’s recommended foodie attractions on foot.

Stay at the Judge’s Lodging

There are 21 beautiful guest rooms, some in the old house with fabulous high ceilings and ornate cornices, plus 5 bijou rooms to the rear.

Be aware that the bijou rooms really are called that for a reason. They are small and tucked away behind the main house but they do have an ensuite shower room and contemporary styling. They also have their own front door which opens directly on to a small terrace, so you can step outside and enjoy a drink.

Expect complimentary WiFi, tea & coffee making facilities, comfortable beds with plump pillows and complimentary toiletries.

Dine Outside, Inside

With its own 2 AA rosette restaurant and a kitchen garden, you know that you’re going to wake up to a delicious Yorkshire breakfast. Alternatively, why not have their house speciality of eggs Benedict?

For the evening, the Judge’s Lodging has plenty of options. There’s an atmospheric Cellar Bar with vaulted ceilings and lots of cosy dining and drinking areas. There’s also a simply stunning glass box – where you almost feel like you’re dining outside. If you’re visiting on a balmy summer’s day, there are two sun terraces where you can enjoy a drink al fresco.

  • No need to grab a taxi, the Judge’s Lodging is just a 5 minute walk from York train station.
  • There’s a Cask Bar hidden away on the first floor and also the aptly-named Medicinal Cabinet which serves a selection of gins and whiskies
  • Don’t miss going for traditional afternoon tea at legendary Bettys Tea Rooms which is just a short walk away. You can over indulge and then come back for a lie-down

Dog Policy Mr Hendricks says, “They say they’re sorry but they’re only able to accept working dogs. Do I count?”.
