The Hotel TerraVina Story

Now celebrating its 11th year, the Hotel TerraVina is the venture of Gérard and Nina Basset who opened the hotel following the sale of the Hotel du Vin chain in 2004, which Gérard co-founded.

Wine Credentials

Following the sale, Gérard Basset, already a well-recognised wine specialist, travelled the world to further his wine knowledge. The result – a long list of wine accolades to his name including Best Sommelier in the World. He is the only person to hold the world title who is also a Master Sommelier, a Master of Wine and a Wine MBA.

Wine Tasting

The wine list is extensive. With many wines available by the glass, and expert guidance from the hotel’s sommelier team, you can taste your way around the world. There are themed monthly wine dinners, informal tutored tastings, wine cellar tours and in your room, glossy wine magazines. Go home with one of Gérard’s specially selected wine boxes, his book or wine tasting glasses designed in collaboration with Lehmann glass.

Style

Hotel TerraVina is influenced by California’s Napa valley, one of the couple’s favourite wine regions. They renovated the red brick Victorian property and brought sunshine into the 11 generously-sized bedrooms with burnt orange, colourful stripes and in the restaurant, leather banquettes and lime green accents. There’s a large covered verandah overlooking the lawned garden (lovely for alfresco dining in the summer), and a heated outdoor pool.

Rooms

Rooms are large and calming with photography and art from the local area. Some come with roof terraces offering treetop views, others with patios. The most in-demand room is the first floor ‘Vin Doux Naturel’. Power showers and rolltop baths come with organic products and rubber ducks. The huge beds are supremely comfy and the forest so peaceful, you’ll sink into a deep and restful night’s sleep.

Bar & Restaurant

The cocktail hour is celebrated in the cosy bar. The Bistro style restaurant, with its open kitchen, serves bold and hearty dishes from chef, Gavin Barnes, and his team. As you’d expect from the hotel’s name, there’s a strong emphasis on local produce (the New Forest has its own Marque). Guests can choose the Tasting Menu or a set menu offering plenty of choice. Desserts are divine and can be matched with exquisite dessert wines.
