Brighton’s Chocolate Fantasy World

Visit Brighton and there’s one chocolate brand that everyone knows about. Born and bred in the town over 20 years ago, Choccywoccydoodah is very proud of its south coast heritage and roots. Brightonians, who are generally known for their eccentricity, artistic streak and unshockable nature, have helped build up a loyal fan base for this niche and slightly bonkers company that’s purely dedicated to the vices of cake and chocolate.  Step inside Choccywoccydoodah’s chocolate emporium located among Brighton’s famous shopping Lanes and it feels like you’ve walked into a drag queen’s dressing room or a chocolate brothel. Its dark and dramatic interior is choc-a-block with magnificent and unique masterpieces and novelty chocolates that all make a statement.

Admire the Chocolate Showpieces and Cakes

Choccywoccydoodah’s founders have cleverly employed talented artists and designers and then trained them to work with chocolate as if it were Plasticine. Their team of ‘Doodahs’ work together as one big eccentric happy family. Their working life has even been captured in its own TV documentary series on The Good Food Channel, now in its 7th series. Sparked by their creativity and imagination, they mould and sculpture chocolate to create giant cakes with a difference. A wedding cake may be adorned with roses but also crowned with two skulls and a ‘Til Death Do Us Part’ emblem. Popular choices for celebrations include giant chocolate statues of perhaps a naked Adonis or a goddess, and their marshmallow pyramid cakes. Commissions for extravagant creations have come from celebrities such as Sir Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg and entrepreneur, Sir Richard Branson. More recently, they created an elaborate cake to mark the opening of The Secret Garden at Hampton Court Palace by the Duchess of Cambridge.

Sit Down at The Bar Au Chocolat

Upstairs at the Bar Au Chocolat, treat yourself to a decadent and over-the-top chocolate tasting experience. Order a huge platter of chocolatey treats to share with your friends: perhaps a divine salted caramel chocolate milkshake; the huge Choccywoccydoodah ice-cream sundae or a dipping pot of molten chocolate with strawberries, honeycomb, marshmallows, coconut macaroons and chunks of tiffin and brownie. With Brighton’s famous seafront just minutes away, you can have a totally indulgent sugar rush and follow it with a bracing walk along the esplanade.

Browse the Chocolate Gifts

On your way out, pick up some gifts in the chocolate emporium. There are chunky caramel banoffi chocolate bars that are so thick they’ll need cutting with a heavy duty knife, chocolate mendiants, giant jazzies sprinkled with colourful sugar strands, luscious lips and huge chocolate popcorn lollipops. Animals are part of the Choccywoccydoodah family too (their dogs feature on the company website), so you’ll find a whole chocolate menagerie. Take home a chocolate duck, frog, cute kitten or dogs including French bulldogs, Westie puppies and Schnauzers.
